I don't think that in this case saving face and getting re-elected stand in the way of a no deal Brexit. The EU politicians can say they have done all they can to come to a deal but the UK has unrealistic demands and it is the UK that wanted to leave. OTOH, Boris Johnson can say that the EU was totally inflexible, but his mantra was "Get Brexit done". He delivered on that promise and the UK got back "control".
Regarding re-election; I don't see any EU politician being in danger of losing an election over a no deal Brexit. Boris Johnson and Michael Gove... That isn't an issue for another three years or so. Voters have short memories...
