There is one big difference between the UK and most other European countries. The UK has no basic central administration for residents. It is difficult to get into the UK, but once you are in, it is relatively easy to lead a more or less normal life.
Here in the Netherlands and most other EU countries, it is next to impossible for an illegal immigrant to have a normal life. To get a job you need an ID. To open bank account you need an ID. To rent or buy a house you need an ID. To buy a car you need an ID. To get an ID, you have to be registered in the central basic administration.
There is no such thing in the UK. In the UK is is possible to stay below the radar and have a semi normal life. That is one reason the UK is a popular destination for illegal immigrants.
