Then I respectfully have to conclude that your sampling-group of German bee... bee... bee.. (sorry, can't force the word through my lips in that context) is terribly flawed. As Bjorn explained, without knowledge of the dark monastic ales with which the lowlands are abundantly blessed you shouldn't even have the word "beer" in your vocabulary.
As for the American breweries ... ny first experience was 1972 as a 22yr old and I was appaled at what Americans called bee... bee,.. bee,,, <damn, it happens again> ... the last years however those small local outlets with mainly local output are closing the gap in taste and quality. What I like is those small taster-glasses in case you are treading on unknown territory and do not want to be unhappily surprized.
