This is the actual statement from the Brexit-Workgroup of the EP ... "The proposals fall short and are a significant step away from the joint commitments and objectives,", the group refers to the "backstop" solution the Europeans had agreed with Johnson's predecessor Theresa May on the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland to keep it open. Michel Barnier was present.
The EP is concerned about the prospect of customs controls and their impact on the peace process and the integrated economy on the island of Ireland.
In addition, it finds it "unacceptable" that the operational details should only be worked out "after" the approval of the agreement. Moreover, the role of the Northern Ireland Parliament, which has not met for almost three years, makes the agreement "uncertain".
