My take on it is quite simple. The Brexit "Leave"-people won for the same reason (and in the same year) as Donald Trump was elected as President of the USA: regular people believed it could never happen, were confident and didn't bother to vote ... but all the hard-liners voted and made a minority's wish come true.
Given the present state of affairs and with the current available knowledge, there is no way the outcome of a Brexit-referendum would yield a "Leave" result.
Donald Trump however would still be elected ...
