My father was among the last on Dunkrik beach when about everyone was gone.
With his uncle (Achile-Adhemar from a previous mail) vanished on the battlefield he could not make his mother (Achile-Adhemar's sister) to go through the anguish of not knowing where her son was for several years, and decided to give himself up after the order of surrender had been given.
I never heard him mention anything than that he'd been at Dunkirk and an odd desire to walk on that beach again. Then early 2018 while his mind often already faded away at the age of 97 he had a very bright spell and told me the whole bloody deal ... about someone's skull exploding and the gut of the brains all over him, guys with limbs torn off, a guy with his intestines hanging out of his belly and calling for his mam ... a scene reminiscent of the opening scenes of "Saving Private Ryan" ... I saw the horror in my dads eyes, and then it was gone again. It took hem 78 years to come up with the tale ...
