I've never heard about steel workers moving to Sweden, I don't even know how important steel production was at the time ... even if there was steel production at all.

But it is correct that there has been tremendous immigration from trades people, craftsmen, financiers, arts, etc to the north for religious reasons under pressure from Spaniards and catholicism venturing north into the low countries.

It has meant the development of Amsterdam from a village along the Amstel to a world center, even in those days.

As for Walloon emigration, in Battery Park NYC near the landing for the Statue of Liberty is a monument remembering the 1624 settlement of Manhattan by 30 Walloon families.

In later years, the Dutch rewrote history by claiming it were Dutch-people that colonized Manhattan while in fact it was only a Dutch ship which carried the Walloons calling them Dutchmen.

Some years ago, as the result of a law-suit by the current Walloon regional government, the cigarette-brand Peter Stuyvesant had to withdraw a publicity campaign that Peter Stuyvesant had settled Manhattan while in reality he only arrived there in 1646 ... 22 years later.
