My opinion is that to connect to fidonet is even easier than in 199x - due to internet (of course, sometimes envy collegues who still have analog line and can experience that modem handshake).
Still have for free fidonet point in OCI (even more, these guys started to shutdown idle enviroments = mining monero fixed that ;-)
1) easy to connect, 2) for free, 3) optionally - making money ( c ) Fidonet 2023
