MBSE uses the joe already installed on the system. I've never tried it, but it should be possible to use nano. However, nano may not support some of the features of joe that led Michiel Broek (the original author of MBSE) to select it as the default full screen editor for use with MBSE.

That's certainly your privilege to do so. If it works for you, there's no reason to change.
