For those who don't know the background of ISDN ;) The whole telephone network in Germany is (soon: was) based on ISDN. It's not just the Euro ISDN with two 64kbit/s data channels, it's also the trunked version with multiple s0 for small businesses and the s2m with 30 data channels for larger companies. Based on the selected service a data channel can be just that, a 64kbit/s data connection (US: 56k), or a voice call. For a data connection you don't need a long running modem handshake. An ISDN line is less expensive than the equivalent in POTS lines. The last s0 ISDN PCI card I've bought was 12 bucks or so (a brand new one). Remember the V.92 (56k) modems? Works only if the other side is ISDN. That's why people cling on their ISDN lines. I hope you get the picture.
