Hello Paul,

AV> Good ${greeting_time}, Wilfred!
HD> Why is that variable not filled in?

PQ> So that it matches the time of day for the receiver, without
PQ> necessitating the sender to guess when the receiver will receive it.

I see.
The Idea is ok, the result not.

PQ> Neat, isn't it?

No, because it only works if the receiver has a mail-reader with the same feature in it. Using it makes an assumption on what the receiver has.
A long time I thought it was an error from the sender.
In reality it still is ;-).
As we all live in different time zones,
I accept a greeting not matching the moment of the day.
Experienced mail writers choose greeting words that ar ok at every time.
Then you donot have to trust on what receivers have at their machines.
Everyone knows that we all use much different software, with only a slight small part of it in common.

WvV> Why do we need gpg to exchange echomail?
AV> That's needed for transmitting the session password via routed netmail.
AV> However, I can use direct connection for that purpose...
HD> Someone can also fake your Node and name,
HD> and poll a system looks like if it were you who was calling.
HD> + Origin: Connectivity is the Future; UniCorn BBS 31 26 4425506
PQ> That's why we have session passwords.

Of course.

PQ> None or an incorrect password: no session!

For future sessions after the first (unprotected) one, that's ok.
But the danger is the first connection.

PQ> Easy-peasy.

No you missed the critical point, namely the very first time.
If someone knows we want to exchange echomail or other files,
and we exchange a mailer-sessionpassword, AreaLink password, pkt-password,
fileEchopassword etc. for the first time,
a 3rd person can intercept a routed netmail,
or fake a crashpoll to exchange passwords.
That's named "a man in the middle".
Have you ever heard of it?

PQ> --- Paul's Win98SE VirtualBox

Ah, you live in a virtual world, that why you donot bother... ducking ;-).

Henri.
