That would be too easy. Besides that isn't what I asked, but now that you bring it up I get the impression that it is my system that has to supply a working version of joe in the first place. If that is so then it seems to me that somewhere there is a configuration for it somewhere in mbse that might be open to replacement of joe with nano which I know for a fact can handle utf8 characters. I am not too sure about joe but I suppose I can easily find out if indeed I must supply the working copy that mbse will then use.
Are my above assumtions valid? In the meantime I'll have a looksee at joe to see if there are any utf8 issues no matter which emulation. I already know that I'll be sticking with vim for everything I do that requires an editor. Nothing beats it.
