Orders were to avoid any Russian targets, aiming to avoid escalation with Russia. Russian air defense systems said to be being used (unconfirmed) but unlikely to escalate further than that if strikes targeted on chemical weapons capabilities.
Pentagon presser continues: - US used double the number of missiles as last year. - Can confirm use of chlorine, can't rule out Sarin. - Used deconfliction channels with Russians but say they did not share targets.

Exactly. if the US really believed that the places it attacked were sites where chemical weapons were stored then it had acted with horrific irresponsibility. It is amazing that not one journalist asked Mattis: How can you justify bombing sites where, according to your claims, deadly chemical agents, including sarin, are stored? Wouldn't they be released into the atmosphere? Wouldn't that lead to tens of thousands of deaths?

In other words, the US military knew, just as the media know, that there are no chemical weapons in Syria. It was all about, to use Washington parlance, "sending a message." To whom? Not to Syria but to Russia.
@GeorgeSzamuely What message would Russia and Iran receive that they didn't know already? Everyone knows the West is stuck going round in circles on the trolley tracks they built for themselves.
