On 2:5019/40 I'm currently using heavily modified version of jamnntpd. It uses smapi library (current 1.9) from hpt project and it works directly with fido databases without any middleware gating. it can use hpt configuration files as a source for echoes/users (with name/address lock). And also supports iconv in addition to old xlat-tables codepage translations. If I remember right there are also some additions like sasl/gssapi authentication and other various tweaks for weird nntp clients. Also as a bonus it present FGHI url in every message. ^_^
There were also nntp server on 2:5019/400 (https://fido.g0x.ru/) which used mysql database as a backend for echoes/users and also supported UTF-8 fully back then, but source codes of that part were lost. Maybe one day I will find some time and desire to finish project started in 2011 for fullfeatured gating software in C which stores everything in sql database (postgresql + pgsql) and can provide classic fido access, nntp and modern ajax-like web interface with clean api for 3d-party applications.
